As of September, the Man of Steel is getting a makeover. In Superman comic, he's going to be all kneepads and seams, in Action Comics #1, he's going to look like the son of a farmer. I wasn't sure about this look at first, but after drawing him for myself...



I totally get it now.

I first read Weapon X round at my friend Alex Jamal's house. Marvel Comics Presents, issues... I don't know. Maybe from issue one onwards? I don't remember. What I do remember is having my tiny mind completely blown by Barry Windsor Smith's stunning, horrible, gorgeous artwork and - just as importantly - his spare, punchy, visceral writing (I probably wouldn't have used the word "visceral" back then. Then again, I might - pretentious child). For a while, I was fascinated by Windsor-Smith, how his art morphed from the early Kirby-stuff to the more delicate, art nouveau-inspired stuff. I even kind of got into Mucha cos of how much it reminded me of BWS.

I haven't thought about Weapon X and Barry Windsor-Smith much since the early 90s, so it was a real pleasure to go back to them for this Twart. If I have time, I might do a colour version of this.

GIANT!

Hey! Just a quick reminder to high-tail it down to your nearest supplier of comic books tomorrow to buy this year's Superman 80-Page Giant. I've got my comp copy already and it's really, really good. Pretty much every story in it is a wee gem, but look out especially for Neil Kleid and Dean Haspiel's belting Perry White/Wildcat story, a terrific Lois Lane short from Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover, and a Jimmy Olsen story from Abhay Khosla and Andy MacDonald which I'm calling the short comics story of the year (even though it's only Feb).

Terry and the Pirates...

I put off drawing this for ages, cos I had no idea how to approach the subject matter, and (shamefully) I know almost nothing about Terry and the Pirates. I also know how beloved Terry and (creator) Milton Caniff are in artist circles. So yeah, daunting.

Hope I didn't botch it too badly.

Of course, as any true Whovian knows, the Riddler is quite mad to go up against the Seventh Doctor in a game of chess. I mean... this guy played Fenric and won, right?

Doctor Whoooo (hey!)

...Doctor Who

The new Doctor Who Magazine is out today, and I drew ten pages of it! Pretty mad, huh? The story is called The Screams of Death, it's by Jonny Morris, and it's a seedy, horrible tale of demons and divas in 19th Century Paris. I had a whale of a time drawing it, and James Offredi has coloured it up just right.

I have to be honest, I was a bit worried about drawing this one. I always get a bit of stage fright before doing Doctor Who - he's been a part of my life since I was a wee nipper, so I always feel like I have to really raise my game for him. That probably sounds a bit mental, doesn't it? Anyway, as I've sort of mentioned in interviews before, Matt Smith is a tricky bugger to get right. He's got that Peter Davison quality: distinctive, but mercurial (translation: he looks different from every angle, and he has no eyebrows). I think I nailed a passable caricature, but I don't think I quite got him right till part two (which you'll have to wait till next month to see, you lucky bastards).

Before I got cracking with drawing the actual strip, the chaps at DWM asked me to design a few bits and pieces. And here they are (only look if you don't mind being mildly spoiled for the story):

I Was Working in the Lab Late One Night...

I was a bit late delivering this commission, so I decided to do a bit extra for the client. The brief asked for an A4 pic of Frankenstein (that *is* his name!) with maybe something a bit World War II-y thrown in. The only way I could make that work well is to come up with a mini-narrative, which meant going up a size as well (11x17).

Doctor Who and the Dialects!

Below is a recent commisson piece, set in my home county of Cornwall (aah, I bet you all thought I was Scottish, didn't you?). The client wanted to see himself and his wife in a thrilling adventure with the Tenth Doctor the Daleks. So, like Jim'll Fix It, I fixed it for him to have just that!

I'm particularly chuffed with the Dalek in the bottom right there - he just came together really well.

The pencils! This was the piece which finally convinced me to go back to using a mechanical graphite pencil after a couple of years of using blue pencil. It was fun, blue pencil, but mechanical graphite pencil is just more... flexible.

I loved doing these - Daleks, South Crofty Tin Mine, girls in chains - it was like my teenage years all over again.

Hellboy/Ghost Rider - now in mono!

I normally hate to, as it were, double dip on a pic I've done (and how dead is a phrase when even politicians have started to use it? That'll the be the first and last time I use that phrase, promise), but I was rifling through my sketches folder and came across the inks for my Hellboy/Ghost Rider mash-up thing. Looks better than I remember, so I decided to stick it up in here. That's okay, right?
