Sketch of t'day: MARTIAN MANHUNTER

I have a whole pitch worked out for this guy - how he's a superhero on Earth, an orphan on Mars, and in the deep dark of space he's a tough as nails PI. No corner of the cosmos is safe from the watchful eyes of J'onn J'onnz, and no one crosses the MANHUNTER FROM MARS.
Cool character.

Mini-sketches: THOR

Do you even Dredd, bro?

Warning, this one contains LANGUAGE

Day of Judgement!

Some recent Judge Dredd fan art. Drawn very small on cartridge paper then tarted up in photoshop. I was going for a sort of gnarly 70s movie poster look. It works! Kinda.

Maaaaaarv!

This is Marv from Sin City, a recent commission piece. Not bad, not bad.

BIG TROUBLE!

My variant cover for Boom Studios' terrific Big Trouble in Little China book. A total thrill to be involved with this thing - we're big Jack Burton fans in my house.

Two Docs

Doctors Sloan and Strange in... DIAGNOSIS: MAGIC!

ENVELOPE ART: Tom Baker

Looks more like James Franco in a scarf, but it's a nice wee sketch anyway. Just had this mad idea that James Franco would be a great Doctor Who...?!

Supplies supplies!

A little look at what's on my art table at the moment, namely zipatone, comic art, mysterious bottles of black liquid.

GONE APE!

So where have I been for the last month plus change? I've been drawing the DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES comic for Boom! Issue one came out yester (26/11/14) and I juuuuuust finished issue 2. It's earthy, heartbreaking stuff, just as you'd expect a Planet of the Apes thing to be.

If you haven't read issue one, go and do that now. If you have, click below to see ALL the roughs for issue one, get a look at my behind-the-scenes process... that sorta thing.

Panels of the Apes!

so a few months ago, I was asked to try out for Boom Studios forthcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes book. I initally said no, if you can believe that, as I had a pretty full plate at the time. But my friends and family essentially convinced me that to turn this book down would be the actions of a lunatic (I think my missus called me an asshat?), so I crawled back to the lovely people at Boom and told them that yes, indeed I would love to try out, and sorry for being an idiot earlier. And below is what I done did:

I believe the thinking here was to see how well I could deliver the world of the apes, and how well I could convey Malcolm's world, the fall of man. Looking back, I could do these better now, but they did the job, landed me the gig, and the rest, as they say, is yet to come.

Cap! Jumping!

I've always struggled with how to draw Captain America, trying to assimilate the "black, blobby mask" look of 70s Byrne and 80s Zeck, the inky, muscular approach of Jack Kirby... and the underrated, energetic style of Ron Garney. Man, Ron Garney... what an underappreciated talent. Anyway, it's never really clicked for me. But...!

I did this today, and I'm super-pleased with it. I felt like I'd subconsciously worked a hefty slice of Mazzuchelli into the mix, but someone on Twitter pointed out this has a Calvin and Hobbes vibe. Which wasn't deliberate, but is definitely on the money...

So there you go. Cap! Jumping! Thinking I might draw in a Bucky to complete the pic...
